Fraud & safety centre

Deal smart. Deal safe.

Adventure Trader applies identity, listing and fraud-prevention checks, but buyers must still conduct appropriate inspections and due diligence.

Verify the paperwork

Match the seller's ID to the registration certificate (NATIS for vehicles and trailers, SAMSA/licence documents for vessels). Check the VIN, engine and hull numbers physically.

Pay safely

Never pay a deposit to 'hold' an item you haven't seen. Use EFT and only take delivery once the funds have cleared. Be cautious of changed banking details sent by email or WhatsApp.

Meet safely

Meet in daylight at a public place, police station or a verified dealer's premises. Bring someone with you.

Check the badges

Identity-verified and verified-dealer badges mean our team reviewed documents — but they don't replace your own inspection.

Warning signs

Common scams we see

  • Price far below market value with a story about emigrating, divorce or a deceased estate.
  • Seller 'overseas' or 'deployed' who will ship the item after payment.
  • Requests to move the conversation off-platform immediately.
  • Fake transport or escrow companies that ask you to pay them first.
  • Pressure to decide quickly because 'many buyers are interested'.
  • Overpayment scams where a buyer sends too much and asks for a refund of the difference.

Report a listing or user

If something feels wrong, stop and tell us. We review reports and may place accounts on a security hold while we investigate. If you've lost money, report it to SAPS and your bank immediately.

Inspections & transport

For high-value items, get an independent inspection by a qualified mechanic or marine surveyor before paying.
